Just 50 years ago, anxiety and insomnia weren’t in the commonplace category of problems for the average person. Sadly, today, these two conditions afflict tens of millions of Americans. So what’s changed? Along with the benefits of advances in science, medicine and technology, we’ve also gained a host of health conditions which are, in part, attributable to the advances mentioned above. Sure, we’ve got many time-saving gadgets, appliances and life-saving medications. On the down side, this has produced an explosion in the number of people who live a sedentary lifestyle. While, in days past, we might have walked or biked to school or work, we now slip behind the wheel of our car or, at worst, walk to the bus or metro stop. Let’s face it, we’ve become a rather lazy society when it comes to physically exerting ourselves. At the same time, our automated society brings a rapid pace few can juggle adequately. Here we focus on two common conditions which can be truly debilitating. These are anxiety and insomnia, which do go hand in hand. Let’s take a look at some of the common causes and what you can do to get them under control, or even eliminate them completely.

First, it’s important to understand that anxiety can lead to insomnia. Frequent bouts of anxiety will detract from a general sense of well-being. The general symptoms of anxiety, including heart palpitations, sweating and an inability to concentrate are not only unpleasant, but scary; many people experience these symptoms so severely that they may fear they are having a heart attack. When people have frequent anxiety attacks, these attacks can certainly impact your day-to-day productivity and create a dysfunctional state. As stated above, anxiety and insomnia go hand in hand. When you feel anxious on an ongoing basis, your worries seem to pile up, impeding your ability to sleep restfully. This is not a situation anyone wants! So what can you do?

A good first step is to begin logging the events preceding an anxiety attack, as well as those nights when you find you’re unable to sleep. (Remember, anxiety and insomnia can often occur together … one feeds the other.) A small notebook is all you need for your log.

Over a period of two to three weeks, you’ll begin to see patterns emerge, which can be significant to your specific solution. For example, let’s say you have a co-worker with whom you don’t have the best rapport. Most often, when you interact with this person, you have a disagreement, one which may go unresolved; you just take your resentful feelings and suppress them and walk away, steaming silently. This person will be at an upcoming meeting where you are to give a presentation. As you prepare your presentation, you suddenly feel overwhelmed with anxiety, without being able to pinpoint a specific reason. The night before you are to give your presentation, you also have insomnia. After this sleepless night, you have an anxiety attack at the most inopportune moment, just before your presentation. Here we have a classic example of the relationship between anxiety and insomnia.

This is where your log comes in. When you begin to understand your own triggers, you may be able to bring a degree of control to both conditions.

Take your log to your doctor and discuss what might be done. There are several types of anxiety disorders and your doctor will find your log useful in making a diagnosis and getting you the best treatment. Discuss simple measures you can implement: exercise, relaxation techniques and dietary changes are just a few examples. Follow your doctor’s advice, and take any medications you are prescribed. Continue filling in your log as this is a great learning tool. You may well find yourself free of anxiety and insomnia! To your good health!

If you can not sleep at night you are not alone. Almost every person in the world will suffer from insomnia at one point or another in their lives. For some, it happens once in a while and they go on to sleep again in a night or two. For others, insomnia can go on and on for weeks leaving someone exhausted, mentally sluggish, and down right frustrated. That being said, you can see why finding and fixing the causes of insomnia are important.

For many, the causes of insomnia are related to stress and mental health. If you have a lot on your mind and you are stressed out, your brain may be in overdrive trying to fix your problems thus you can not sleep. You may find you are so worried that you can not turn off your brain to get sleep. The lack of sleep then make the problem worse. Depression and deeper emotional problems can develop when insomnia starts this way as the lack of sleep can make any problem worse.

At times, insomnia has other roots that are easier to take care of and a good night of sleep can be had with little effort. Some make the mistake of drinking the wrong things at the wrong times, leaving a person awake when they should be sleeping. It could be that the causes of insomnia in some people are simply personal habits that leave them worked up when it is time to go to sleep. Simple changes in lifestyle can easily fix these problems. This type of insomnia is not a long term problem and usually turns around in a matter of days.

In other cases, the causes of insomnia are medical. You may have a problem that needs attention by a doctor or perhaps a mental health professional. There are some drugs that can induce sleep, but do not take these without serious consideration as some have very strange and potentially dangerous side effects. The pros and cons should be weighed in each individual case. However, if you are so tired you can not safely drive, work, or care for your family, you may want to take something as a short term fix until something else helps you with your situation.

If the answer to these questions are no, maybe you should trying buying a noise maker to help drown out the unpleasant sounds with some peaceful and some dark curtains to prevent the irritating sunlight to help soothe insomnia during pregnancy.

If you find yourself looking up at the ceiling still awake after a period of 30 minutes, you may want to try getting up and relocating. Go do something worthwhile such as reading something to help you relax or listening to some of your favorite music. During the course of doing these activities, you’ll begin to feel tired and then you should try returning to bed.

The one thing that you do not want to do is worry about not being able to sleep and get agitated. This will only cause insomnia during pregnancy to persist if not make the problem worse, not including make you feel drowsy the day after. However, if you become worried that you have a serious sleep disorder, you’ll be better off to consult a doctor, but remember that this is a condition that’s perfectly normal and you’re not going through it alone.

Oral Appliances Can Be Effective For Sleep Apnea

For those who snore and are at risk for sleep apnea, the dentist may be able to help.

That’s because oral appliances are recommended for those with mild to moderate sleep apnea. The Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine recently endorsed new guidelines for this treatment option, as published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

An oral appliance can look like a sports mouth guard or orthodontic retainer. Worn during sleep, it keeps the airway open and unobstructed by repositioning or stabilizing the lower jaw, tongue, soft palate or uvula.

According to the guidelines, the severity of the problem should first be assessed by a sleep clinician who can then decide if a dental referral is needed.

The exact cause of obstructive sleep apnea remains unclear. People with the condition may stop breathing hundreds of times during sleep, often for up to a minute at a time. Estimates are that 18 million people in the U.S. are affected.

The new guidelines affirm that continuous positive airway pressure therapy, or CPAP, should be considered as the first treatment option for sleep apnea, but for the first time state that oral appliances may be offered initially to people who prefer it to CPAP or who are intolerant to CPAP therapy. Research also suggests that oral appliances may be more effective than soft palate surgery.

"For many people with obstructive sleep apnea, an oral appliance is the best and most convenient treatment available," said Dr. Kent E. Moore, president of the ADSM.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved 40 different types of oral appliances, currently available on the market. Patients are advised to schedule follow-up appointments with their dentist for evaluation and monitoring.

The field of dental sleep medicine is experiencing rapid growth. Statistics show a growing need to address sleep apnea problems and the best methods of treatment. Half of sleep apnea patients may have high blood pressure, and risk for heart attack and stroke may also increase.

While occasional snoring is almost universal, nearly 60 percent of Americans suffer from daytime sleepiness as a side effect of sleep apnea, according to the ADSM. And each year, sleep disorders add nearly $18 billion to the national health care bill.

In this article, we’ll discuss the treatments that doctors typically suggest and how they can easily be incorporated into your lifestyle.

There are four basic approaches to apnea treatment, and they can be used in conjunction with each other. The simplest method involves changing the situation which could be causing the condition. The patient is advised to lose weight, quit smoking, avoid alcohol and sedative drugs, keep a consistent sleeping schedule and try to lay only on their side. The most common treatment option is using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) in the upper airway to hold the airway open using support. This treatment is done by wearing a CPAP mask over the nose. Continuously flowing air is pumped through a small flexible plastic hose by the CPAP machine. Studies have indicated that when patients use CPAP, they not only have slept better and were more attentive throughout the day, but there were vast improvements in the size, shape and pumping action of their hearts.

The third apnea treatment option is the use of an oral splint to prevent the jaw and tongue from shifting back and blocking the allowance of air. However, oral devices have not shown to be as effective as CPAP and the appliances can bring great discomfort. The last and most difficult form of remedy is surgery. This kind of procedure involves removal of part of the soft palate that hangs down in the back of the throat, as well as the tonsils if present, and other soft tissue if it seems to be excessive. Surgery is usually reserved for patients with severe sleep apnea.

It is imperative that you find immediate treatment once you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. It’s also important to follow up with your prescribed treatment faithfully. Wearing a dental splint or a CPAP mask might seem uncomfortable at first, you’ll soon be acclimated to it. A few nights of discomfort will be worth it once you see how a restful night of sleep improves your genera health. People who have undergone sleep apnea treatment have reported better moods, less headaches, a clearer mind, and have enhanced performance at work.

What Causes Snoring

What does snoring indicate?

Ever had a sleepless night because of your friend’s snoring? I have! Well… snoring can indicate some serious issues that you might need to deal with like high blood pressure and all the consequences that come along (heart disease, stroke, etc) or less serious like some obstructions like enlarged tonsils, or tissue etc.

Out of all the sleep disorders that we face as human beings, this has got to be one of the worst. I know of married couples that have to sleep in two different rooms because one snores to the point that the other can’t sleep. Of course you can always wear earplugs, but who wants to sleep the rest of their life with those in their ears? Then there is always layering pillows over your head or purchasing a box fan to place at your head on the speed of high to "knock" out the noise from the one you love. How many of us have lain in bed at night staring at the ceiling getting madder by the moment while the one next to us or in the same room as us is deep in slumber to the tune of their own melody?

Snoring is simply occurs when air flows past tissue in your throat that is relaxed; this causes the tissue to vibrate when you breath making a hoarse or harsh sound.

I have researched and discovered that we should actually be concerned for the one who keeps us up at night; snoring can indicate a serious health condition. Many times it is a sign that sleep apnea is present; sleep apnea is a "disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep. Each episode, called apneas lasts long enough so that one or more breaths are missed, and occurs repeatedly throughout sleep. The standard definition of any apneic event includes a minimum 10 second interval between breaths, with either a neurological arousal, a blood oxygen desaturation of 3-4% or greater, or both arousal and desideration." Polysomnogram is the name of the sleep test that helps diagnosing apnea. Not all apnea are clinically significant; it’s levels become problematic if they occur more than five times per hour – that includes any type of apnea.

There is more than one sleep apnea types and they have been categorized in three separate forms: central apnea, obstructive apnea, and complex apnea (which represents a combination of the first two).

In central sleep apnea breathing is broken up by the lack of effort and this occurs in 0.4% of the cases. The obstructive sleep apnea is the most encountered type found in 84% of the patients and it is due to a physical blockage of the airflow in spite of effort.

The rest of 15% are represented by the mixed sleep apnea, where there is a switch from central apnea to obstructive apnea’s characteristics during sleep.

The person with sleep apnea doesn’t usually realize he has it, regardless of the apnea type he might suffer from. The individual doesn’t know or find out about it; it is usually others that can witness these episodes. These symptoms can be present for long periods of time (years on end) without being identified, the only things that the person might notice and be disturbed with, are fatigue the daytime sleepiness.

Another concern for one with sleep apnea is high blood pressure or hypertension. Controlled studies have shown a definite link between people who snore and the presence of high blood pressure. However, one who does not have sleep apnea but snores could still have high blood pressure caused from the snoring. When one snores, it disturbs their cardiovascular system such as their heart rate and blood pressure. This leads to heart disease, strokes etc.

Sleep apnea is not limited to only adults; it can also be present in infants and children; it has no respect of age. How does one know if their baby or child has sleep apnea? Simply listen. If your child breathes nosily on a continuous basis it is very possible that could have sleep apnea. Another indication is consistent sleepiness during the daytime; this is also a very strong indication for adults. Snoring could be a possible warning or symptom of something else that is very serious. Brain tumors are many times accompanied by snoring.

Sometimes snoring can be caused by enlarged tonsils that can be removed or there may be a problem with ones adenoids which is simply a mass of throat tissue at the back of ones nose and throat that could possibly limit breathing if the tissue is enlarged.

However, snoring can be alleviated and it is good to know where you stand in this regard; it can be an indicator or a warning, helping you fight other potential serious conditions.
